What pets can I get if I have a vicious cat?

I have a cat, and I love him very very much, but I've basically come to the conclusion that I can't get another pet. I absolutley adore animals, every aspect of them. I want a small one that I can handle. I love birds, but my cat would eat it. I love any small mammals, but my cat would eat them. I love lizards (not snakes), but my cat would eat them. He's also petrified of dogs. Any ideas on what I can get?
