New HP laptop with DVD burner ?

I have down loaded movies to my laptop from isohunt and couldn't burn them to a dvd to use in my home dvd player...all it would say is file is not good or something....so i down loaded nero and was bale to burn a movie but it took for ever and would not play in my dvd player....but it would in my friends. What should or do I need to do ???
